Olympus om-d e-m5 is a great camera system and even the kit lens perform quite well.

However the real fun begins when combined with good quality prime lenses.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm F1.8 lens is a metal based construction which weights in at 305g compared to the 212g the 12-50mm kit lens does.

This makes it feel more like quality without feeling directly heavy.

With 2x crop sensor on the e-m5 its comparable to 150mm on a 35mm dslr system. Minimum focus distance is 84cm.

A few sample photos taken with it :

Distance to the car approx 8m.

Distance about 3m. Notice the gorgeous color rendition.

bumblebee on flower

Above flower and bumblebee is taken from minimum focus distance, and in a very windy scenario so not entirely in focus. Notice the great micro details in the crop version below :

bumblebee cropped

Pro :

  • Focus speed is excellent, quite instant.
  • Build quality seem great.
  • Focus ring is “soft & smooth” as in easy to move with less resistance than the kit lens equaliant.
  • Excellent sharpness with great micro details ( see flower/bumblebee above ).
  • Great color rendering.

Con :

  • Expensive.
  • Not weather sealed.
  • No lens hood included.
  • No pouch included.

Why Olympus have to be so “cheap” and not include a pouch or lens hood even on such highend lenses is a mysterium, especially since many low cost lenses from other brands like Nikon comes with atleast a lens hood and often a pouch too.

So I say “SHAME ON YOU OLYMPUS” for not having the decency to include a lens hood and good quality pouch on such “pro gear”, oh actually that goes to all your lenses.
